About the Houdan Hen House

The Poule des Houdan or the Houdanian chicken is a long-breasted type of domestic chicken belonging to the sub-group of blue-necked chicken. It is also called for its place of origin, the commune known as Houdan, in the department of Yvelines in the west part of Paris. This breed is the smallest breed of blue-necked chickens and was domesticated several hundred years ago by the Greeks and Arabs.

This breed has a long white crest, which extends to its chest and neck. This crest has the Greek letter alpha on it. The head is large and oval in shape, and has black feathers on the upper part. The underparts of the Houdanian chicken are pinkish, with black markings on the underside.

This breed has been bred for years and has become quite popular in most parts of the world. Its name was derived from the French term "ouman", meaning "the little one". This particular breed is relatively small compared to other breeds. Their body size ranges from about two to three inches in height. The tail of the Houdanian is short and pointed.

This breed does not shed a lot of feathers and the male Houdanian is known to have a small egg sac. These little chicks have an even coat, which is why they are called Houdan. Their color is brownish and they are usually between four to nine inches in length. They are very robust and strong.

The Poule des Houdan is a hardy chicken and it does not easily get sick. However, this breed is prone to various diseases such as ehrlichiosis, hypothyroidism and osteoporosis. It is also susceptible to several diseases, such as fever, cholera, hepatitis, influenza, and typhoid fever, which are brought about by infection by bacteria and parasites.

A Houdan hen requires a lot of space for nesting and other small bird related activities such as feeding and coop cleaning. The female Houdan needs at least one hen house for every four or five birds. This is because she tends to lay up to eight eggs at one time.

There are hen houses which are very wide or long. This way, the chickens can easily move in and out without any problem. On the other hand, there are hen houses which are narrow to ensure that the chickens do not touch each other in their small enclosure. and so are easier for the birds to pass through.
