Saint-Florentin - The Town of Saint Boniface

Saint Florentin is a town in the Bourgogne - France - Comté department of north-central France. It's an ancient commune which has been preserved by a special law that prohibits new buildings from being built on its original grounds. This law, however, does not restrict the use of the old buildings. The town was built in around 990 and it is also one of the oldest French towns in existence.

For some time, the town was used as the seat of the bishop, but he was forced to leave in the sixteenth century. He was succeeded by his son Louis, who was also called the St Boniface, and the whole area was designated as a royal hunting lodge.

Florentins is an old name for the town, but it doesn't refer to its age. When Louis was young, the town was known as the Saint Boniface. Since the latter had become the king, his name was changed to Saint-Boniface. In order to maintain the royal title, Louis began to change the name of the town to St Florentin.
