Asnieres in France

Asnieres-sur-Siene is a rural commune situated in the Haut-de-Seine and the area around it in the Hauts de France area of central France. It lies some eight kilometers away from the centre of Paris on the left bank of this river, some seven kilometers from its source. Asnieres is situated on the south side of this river, towards the city of Reims. It has a population of some nine thousand inhabitants.

Asnieres is part of the commune of Haut-de-Vienne and was once a small fishing village. The name Asnieres is derived from the Latin phrase "Asperges". In the middle ages it was known as Asperges de Vienne and for a short time it was one of the most important villages of all the fishing villages of France. During the Renaissance it became a fishing community, which was quite popular at that time. Later on it changed its name to Asnieres.

Asnieres lies around fifty kilometers from the coast of Nice on the west of the Loire River. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside on three sides, the northern part with rolling hills, the eastern section with hills and small lakes and finally the southern portion which consist of a large wooded forest. All the sides are surrounded by a wall which runs along the eastern part of the town. The eastern part also boasts of an imposing church, the church of Saint-Nicolas. There is another church, the church of Sainte-Justine situated on the west of town.

It lies a little bit below sea level and at the same level there are some springs and water bodies which are part of a larger system of rivers and lakes on the east of the region. All of these are connected with the River Seine. The biggest one of them is the Espace-et-Fils, which flows eastwards towards Bruxelles. and then curves around the Seine before flowing into the sea. then coming back to the west.

The western part of Asnieres is also known as Asnieres de Boulogne and is located on the south side of the River Seine on the right bank. of the river. Here you will find a picturesque little hamlet called the village of L'Anse, which has a well-preserved 19th century French farmhouse on its southwest. The village is about twelve kilometers from its nearest town and is well connected with the rest of Asnieres by rail.

The other farm houses of Asnieres are located on the north, northeast and southeast. These villages consist of one or more farmhouses with houses and cottages on which the population of Asnieres is made up. The people of Asnieres live mostly in agricultural settlements and are known as agriculturists, fishermen and farmers. All these have been known for many centuries and their names have been passed down through the generations.
