Ploermel - A Community in the Bretonnian Region of France

Ploermel is a small commune located in the Morbihan district of Brittany in north-west France. It is a community of approximately five thousand inhabitants and is located close to Monterre in eastern France. In March 2020, the community of Ploermel was merged with the former commune of Monterre.

Most locals speak French and, to some extent, some local people also speak Italian. Some of the residents are Roman Catholic and some are converts to Islam. There are two main schools in Ploermel - Montparnasse primary school and St-Sauveur secondary school. The former is one of the most prestigious schools in the area and has been visited by Princess Diana and President Jacques Chirac. Most residents have been born in France and many speak French as well as their native language.

Despite its size, there is no real distinction between the residents and the other smaller rural community. All are part of the Morbihane district. It is a very conservative region and most residents are not allowed to wear jeans. However, jeans can be worn at the local pub and for socializing purposes.

Due to the high levels of social mobility, the region has a number of well-known artists and writers. Ploermel is the birthplace of the writer, Alexandre Dumas. Alexandre was brought up in this community but later went on to become an acclaimed author. His novel, 'The Count of Monte Cristo', was the inspiration for the Oscar-winning movie. Alexandre Dumas lived in this community before becoming a famous author and his life is very important to most of his fans. His death in 1997 caused a huge loss in the community.

Many artists who came from other parts of France moved to Monterre in the 1950s. These artists included Picasso, Monet and Le Corbusier. Monet was one of the leading painters of the early twentieth century. He often painted at Ploermel and he was a very popular subject of paintings in this community. Monet lived in this community before his major works were published and in one of his most famous pieces, "Women of Algiers", a famous painting of women that was destroyed in World War I.

Due to its social structure, Ploermel has a high level of crime. There are a large number of petty crimes and vandalism and there are many incidents of theft and vandalism committed by young children. Most of the teenagers from other towns of the area come to Ploermel to party and the police have to deal with a lot of disturbances. One of the main problems of crime in Ploermel is drug dealing and alcohol. Most of the drugs in the area come from Italy.
