The Saint Gaudens Tree

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, also known as August Saint Gorges, was an American art sculptor of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries who epitomized the ideals of the modern American Renaissance. Raised by his parents in New York City, he eventually traveled to Europe as an artist, learning the fine arts from a variety of artisans. During his stay in France, he would come to be associated with some of the most important and influential figures in European painting and sculpture including Michelangelo, Salvador Dali, Le Corbusier, Paul Gauguin, and Honor Dansaussay.

His artistic pursuits were not limited to the realm of painting and sculptures, however. As a painter, he worked as an apprentice under a number of notable artists including George Catlin, El Greco, and Pablo Picasso. In addition, Saint-Gaudens began his own collection of antique paintings, which would last until the end of his life.

Although St. Gaudens never achieved any of his goals as an artist, his contributions as a painter are undeniable. His work is still widely sought out by those interested in nineteenth century American art, and for good reason. This particular style of art was one that combined an emphasis on realistic imagery with a highly decorative approach, a mixture of which resulted in a new aesthetic movement that would become known as Impressionism.

St. Gaudens' style was distinctive.
